Bentyl Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Bentyl is an anti-spasmodic drug which relaxes the muscle in the wall of the gut.

Bentyl Dosage

• The usual dose is 160 milligrams per day divided into 4 equal doses.
• If this drug is not effective within 2 weeks or side effects require doses below 80 milligrams per day, your doctor may discontinue it.

Uses of Bentyl

• It is used to relieve cramps or spasms of the stomach, intestines, and bladder.
• Dicyclomine is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome.

Side Effects of Bentyl

Before taken Bentyl medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Bentyl. Side effects may include:

• Dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Light-headedness
• Nausea
• Nervousness
• Weakness

Warnings and precautions before taking Bentyl

• After taken Bentyl, you may feel drowsy or it may also cause blurred vision. So you should not participate in any activity that requires full mental alertness such as operating machinery.
• You should use this medication with caution if you have autonomic neuropathy, liver or kidney disease; hyperthyroidism; high blood pressure; coronary heart disease; or enlargement of the prostate gland.
• You should talk with your doctor if you are or plan on becoming pregnant before taking this medicine. Check with your doctor before you stop using this medicine.
• Do not take dicyclomine if you are breast-feeding a baby.
• Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Bentyl with certain other drugs, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of medicine. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Bentyl with the following:

• Amantadine (Symmetrel)
• Antacids such as Maalox
• Antihistamines such as Tavist
• Benzodiazepines (tranquilizers) such as Valium and Xanax

Overdose

After taken Bentyl if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Bentyl overdose may include:

• Difficulty in swallowing
• Dilated pupils
• Dryness of the mouth
• Headache
• Hot
• Dry skin
• Vomiting
