Claritin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Loratadine is in a class of medications known as antihistamines. It prevent sneezing, runny nose, itching and watering of the eyes, and other allergic symptoms. It is used to treat hay fever and allergy symptoms, such as sneezing; runny nose; and red, itchy, tearing eyes.

Claritin Dosage

• For adults and children 6 years of age and over, the usual starting dose is 10 milligrams once a day, and you should be taken as 1 tablet or 2 teaspoonfuls of syrup.
• For children 2 to 5, the usual starting dose is 1 teaspoonful of syrup once a day. If the child has kidney or liver problems, then you should give 1 teaspoonful every other day.

Uses of Claritin

• Claritin is used to treat allergies, hives, and other allergic inflammatory conditions.

Side Effects of Claritin

Before taken Claritin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor. If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Claritin. Side effects may include:

• Dry mouth
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Sleepiness

Warnings and precautions before taking Claritin:

• You should tell your doctor if you are allergic to loratadine or any other drugs.
• If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications especially erythromycin, ketoconazole, medications for asthma or colds, medications for depression, muscle relaxants, pain medications, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and vitamins, then you should tell your doctor.
• You should tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease.

Drug Interaction :-If you are taking Claritin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Claritin with the following:

• Antibiotics such as erythromycin
• Cimetidine
• Ketoconazole

Overdose

After taken Claritin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Claritin overdose include

• Headache
• Rapid heartbeat
• Sleepiness
• Drowsiness
• Nausea
• Vomiting
