Maxaquin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Lomefloxacin (Maxaquin®) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It kills various bacteria or stops their growth. It is used to treats respiratory and urinary tract infections, or also prevents infection during surgery on the urinary tract.

Maxaquin Dosage

• The usual starting dosage is 400 milligrams once a day for 10 days.
• The usual starting dosage for people on dialysis is 400 milligrams once a day.

Uses of Maxaquin

• Lomefloxacin is used to treat various bacterial infections, such as bronchitis and urinary tract infections.

Side Effects of Maxaquin

Before taken Maxaquin medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Maxaquin. Side effects may include:

• Headache
• Nausea
  

Warnings and precautions before taking Maxaquin:

• If other antibiotics have given you diarrhea while you are taking Maxaquin, then you should tell your doctor. Because maxaquin may cause inflammation of the bowel.
• After taken Maxaquin, you may feel dizziness or light-headedness. So you should not participate in any activities that require full mental alertness such as drive or operate machinery.
• If you are taking Maxaquin, then it may cause rupture of muscle tendons. If you notice any pain or inflammation, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Maxaquin with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Maxaquin with the following:

• Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, such as Maalox or Gaviscon
• Caffeine
• Cyclosporine
• Didanosine
• Probenecid
• Sucralfate
• Theophylline
• Warfarin

Overdose

After taken Maxaquin if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. The most common symptom of a lomefloxacin overdose is seizures.
