Retrovir Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Retrovir medicine is an anti-HIV treatment in a class of drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Retrovir medicine is used to prevents HIV by altering the genetic material of healthy T-cells. Retrovir is also used to prevents the cells from producing new virus and it also decreases the amount of virus in the body.

Retrovir Dosage

• The usual starting dose of Retrovir medicine in combination with other HIV drugs is 600 milligrams a day.
• The usual starting dose for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age decide by your doctor as determined by body size.

Uses of Retrovir

• Zidovudine medicine is used to treat HIV, which may causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
• You can also used this drug with other medications to control your HIV infection, thereby improving your quality of life.

Side Effects of Retrovir

Before taken Retrovir medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Retrovir. Side effects may include:

Warnings and precautions before taking Retrovir:

• You should be used condoms to prevent transmitting the virus to your sexual partner. Because the treatment of HIV infection with anti-HIV medicines does not reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to other people through sexual contact.
• You should be tested the blood regularly, while you are taking Retrovir medicine.
• If you have any problems with your liver, in particular chronic hepatitis B or C, then you should tell your doctor.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Retrovir with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Retrovir with the following:

• Nelfinavir
• Atovaquone
• Doxorubicin
• Phenytoin
• Probenecid
• Fluconazole
• Ribavirin
• Ganciclovir

Overdose

After taken Retrovir if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Retrovir overdose include:

• Fatigue
• Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
