Tegretol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Tegretol is in a group of drugs known as anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that may cause seizures and pain. So it is used to control some types of seizures in the treatment of epilepsy. It is also used to treats nerve-related pain such as trigeminal neuralgia.

Tegretol Dosage

• For the treatment of seizures, the usual starting dose for adults and children over 12 years of age is 200 milligrams and you should be taken twice daily.
• For the treatment of trigeminal Neuralgia, the usual starting dose is 100 milligrams twice or one-half teaspoon 4 times on the first day.

Uses of Tegretol

• Tegretol is used to treat seizures and nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy.
• It is also used to treat bipolar disorder.

Side Effects of Tegretol

Before taken Tegretol medicine, you should discuss the side effects with your doctor.  If any develop or change in intensity, then you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Tegretol. Side effects may include:

• Agitation
• Blood clots
• Abnormal heartbeat and rhythm
• Blurred vision
• Chills
• Depression

Warnings and precautions before taking Tegretol:

• After taken this medicine, then you may feel dizzy, or drowsiness. So you should not participate in any activities that require alertness such as driving and operate machinery.
• If you are taking Tegretol, then it may cause serious blood, liver, and skin reactions. So you should tell your doctor immediately if you develop warning signs as fever, sore throat, rash, ulcers in the mouth or spots in the skin.
• If you have any medical conditions such as heart, liver, or kidney damage, then you should consult with your doctor before taking this medication.

Drug Interaction :-

If you are taking Tegretol with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Tegretol with the following:

• Azithromycin
• Procardia
• Danazol
• Erythromycin
• Fluoxetine
• Itraconazole
• Ketoconazole
• Loratadine

Overdose

After taken Tegretol if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Tegretol overdose include:

• Shallow breathing
• Fast heartbeat
• Staggering walk
• Nausea
• Slurred speech
• Vomiting
• Tremors
• Restlessness
• Seizures
